Chi Terrier Mix Puppy

We recently adopted a 4 mo old chi terrier mix. He seems to devoted to our five family member (3 children ages 7, 4, and 2) but tonight while sleeping my daughter got in his face and he growled. She was able to pick him up and it seemed fine minutes later. Maybe he didn’t want to be bothered. He barks at strangers so we are trying to socialize him per vet recommendations. He warmed up to kids and adults at the park but barks at our neighbors and will stop barking to sniff them with his tail between his legs. He has been playing with our kids and snuggles often. I’m taken aback to see a puppy not friendly with everyone but maybe this is a small dog trait. We don’t have people over to our house often and I see him being extremely territorial. Can we modify his behavior at 4 mos old or is this permanent? We really love him and want this to work. Any advice is appreciated!

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

All the best,
Adam
