territorial aggression/resource gaurding

by nanci

We adopted a 1.5 year old chihuahua mix (possibly terrier, and pug)2 months ago. He is very sweet and loving except for one BIG problem. When on the couch, if someone is standing nearby, or if they lean in, he becomes aggressive. He growls and bites at the person. He does not stop on his own. I have always had to grab him away. Most times this happens when I am on the couch but not all the time. He has even done this to my husband and son, who he is usually great with.
I am so worried that we will have to give him up, as, we cannot predict when he will do this. We have been fortunate so far, that he has not really hurt someone.
Please help!

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

All the best,
Adam
