Schnauzer does not play nice

by Scott
(Tacoma, Wa)

He isn't a puppy he is two years old. When he was a puppy he was attacked by a coyote. Ever since then he either gets into fights with other dogs because he is in defense mode, or he picks on little dogs very much. I use to take him to dog parks but he doesn't know how to play. The big dogs thinks he's trying to show his dominance which he is and they attack. Up to at least 8 fights with large breed dogs. But if he comes across a small dog he is a total jerk to them. Great with humans by the way. He can't even play with puppy labs. He has to dominant them then when the dad comes along he turns into a pile of scarred schnauzer. Any help is appreciated!

Schnauzer MIX aggressive when tired

by Mindy
(Chicago, IL)

My family rescued a schnauzer/irish wolfhound mix. She is spayed and roughly 8 months old. She is wonderful, friendly toward everyone, and super obedient. The problem is that within the last month (been with us 4 months now) she has started showing aggression toward my kids (ages 1 and 3) only when she's tired. She will be napping on the floor and suddenly wake up growling at them if they are too noisy or too close to her. Any other time she loves them! She doesn't bite but will jump up and nip them (leaves no marks whatsoever). If I tell her no or say her name like she's doing something wrong then she immediately stops but will go right back to it the minute she is disturbed again.

She's a wonderful dog any other time! And she is so good with my daughters as long as she's not tired. She's gentle with them, loves to play with them, and even does well when they play a little rough with her.

Her little outbursts are never directed at my husband or myself and are always when she is trying to sleep. Her gentleness is reassuring but it's still scary to see her jump up and nip them. What if one of these times she actually bites?
How can I help the situation? She already has her own spaces she can go to any time, two dog beds and a cage with a cushion. But she tends to prefer laying on our hard floors to stay cool.

Aggressive Growling Black Schnauzer Puppy

by Roni
(Newport Beach, CA)

Ever since my puppy came home at 8 1/2 weeks she has been very vocal. Not just barking and crying, but howls and rolls her barking almost like trying to tell you something. I realize adult dogs do this, but have never seen a puppy do this so early. Another sound she makes is an aggressive growl and bites or nips. She tends to do this often when playing or the playing begins to get rough. I try to give her down time and sleeping breaks, keeping play time to a short sessions. I notice the aggression tends to happen in the evening about an hour before bed time. She gets mad when we won't let her up on the couch and the aggressive growling and biting begins. Does this mean she could become a mean dog when she is older? What is the best remedy to stop this aggressive behavior.

8 week old miniature schnauzer

by Ruby
(Kent)

I have a 5 month old cavapoo and he is lovely so gentle!
Last weekend I brought home an 8 week old miniature schnauzer as a friend for my cavapoo.. I didn't no anything about dog farms and just thought the breeders must
Have really loved dogs! All the pens they were in were spacious and very clean just alot of different breed dogs most pregnant or just had a litter.. my pup was in a separate cage with her sisters.. I brought her home and she's very good and gentle with us but seems to really wind my other dog up growling and nipping but a couple of times she has bit his bottom jaw quite hard and it has hurt him she just won't leave him when she gets in the mood no matter how much he pushes her away is this normal? I'm very worries incase it's something genetic with her temperament
Thanks Ruby.

Aggressive Schnauzer / Terrier mix 7-8mo. range

by Dane
(O'Fallon, MO)

My wife and I just recently got Henry our 8 month old Schnauzer / Wheaton Terrier mix. We have had him for about 4 days now.

We did a meet and greet with our 2yr old dog Rin (dachsund / beagle mix) at the local animal shelter where he was and they were generally very happy together.

Since bringing Henry home, he's displayed on again / off again dominant behaviors towards Rin and us.

He uses his mouth and snaps a lot. He doesn't bite particularly hard but he makes Rin yelp a lot. He pesters her a lot and will not leave her alone when she doesn't want to play. He nips and bites at her to get attention and she ends up running around the house or into our laps for safety. She's generally miserable and we are having a hard time getting Henry to stop.

He even will mouth us and nip at us when we tell him now or lightly tap him away to stop. He continues to pester Rin even when she's in a chair or in our laps trying to escape and continues to mouth and nip at all of us.

Both dogs are fixed.

I understand that the dogs are trying to find their place in the pack so to speak but just from a training perspective he's staring to leave marks on us too.

We're currently exercising the timeout routine to curb the excessive biting and nipping.

Will update on progress.

Any suggestions will help greatly. Thanks.

Aggressive Schnauzer Puppy

by chasa
(england)

We already have a beautiful miniture schnauzer boy of six and we recently got a female standard cross Miniture Schnauzer. We have had her for four weeks and she is getting harder to control, the main problem is she will nip our dogs legs or muzzel whenever he moves, and our poor dog is really nervous of her.

He is very gentle and loves to play with the pup but she just keeps biting him in a nasty way, not playful. We are always saying no to her and we have tried taking her out of the same room even hitting her on the nose, which I know to be wrong but am at a loss with what to try next. If I get between them and try to protect our older dog she snaps at me,I just don't know how long we can keep her like this as there seems to be no nice times any moore. Please Help.

Aggressive schnauzer puppy

My 8 week old schnauzer is becoming more aggressive by the day, he growls and barck and bites (does not nip playfully) the growling is very aggressive and he has drawn blood more than once. I have tried telling him NO firmly but he just doesn't mind and keeps on doing it, I tried sprinkling some wáter and he bite the bottle and keep on biting ,I tried putting him on his back while holding him and tellimng him No,or Calm , he calms down and when I put him on the floor he starts barking and biting again if he is playing with his toys then he bites it 2 or 3 times and then come to where I am seated bite me and then returns to his toys and repeats the process over and over. I love this little dog but it drives me crazy not being able to correct his behavior . Your advise will be highly appreciated

Aggressive miniature schnauzer male

by Lacey R.
(Fairfax, Virgina, US)

I was so excited to get a new puppy since I missed my girl mini schnauzer being a tiny pup. So my friends dog had a litter and gave me one. He was 7 weeks when I took him home because he was already biting his mom when he was being fed and fighting with his litter mate. He came to my home and bullied my 4 year old schnauzer. I'm aware he is teething but my first one didn't exhibit this type of biting behavior. He violently snaps at me, my dog, and my parents, he gets aggressive anytime we try to do anything with him. He is now 10 weeks and I'm not sure if I want to keep him or put him through training. I don't mind investing the money if this can be fixed but if it doesn't I'm not sure if I'll keep him.
