Aggressive puppy at 5 weeks? Beagle mix

by Amanda
(Houston, TX)

I have a 5 week old Beagle Mix (3/4 beagle, 1/4 pit bull) that is acting aggressive. He tries to bite us and when he gets a hold of something, he has this death grip and it is nearly impossible to pry him off. I have read to put him in his kennel until he calms down when he is playing rough, and that often helps but the behavior seems to be getting worse. I can't get his collar on him and he tries to get at my hand rather than toys that I offer him. He will occasionally play by himself, to which I find much relief. I know I can reward him for playing by himself but I hate to distract him from his toy and have him come after me.

He is also starting to become defiant. He was following me around religiously when we go outside and now he turns straight back for the door instead and I have to go get him and carry him far enough that he feels he has to follow me and our other dog.

What can I do other than only reward good behavior? How do I make him let go of something when he has it?

He is so small but he doesn't act like it and I worry about when he gets larger.

Agressive Beagle Puppy

by Laura
(Erie Pa us)

Our Beagle is 10 months old. He has always nipped at my 16 year daughter. In the last few weeks he has gotten worse and does it to everyone in the family. It seemed to get worse after we got back from a camping trip. He was very good towards my daughter and distant family members.

Our Beagle did not stay at camp with us the whole time. He came home off and on and stayed with are teenage son. Now that we are home he seems to be "nipping" harder and more often...Could you explain why he started this and how we can stop it?

My Pups Play Very Aggressively

by Paul
(Toronto)

I brought a 10 weeks old rotticorso female home a month ago. Yesterday I brought a 10 week old boxweiler home. They are OK together, but sometimes they play games and seem to tough. I am worried that they will develop aggressive behaviour towards each other or other dogs. I would appreciate your advise.

Agressive Great Pyrenees

by Cindy
(McDonough, GA, USA)

I have a 6 week old Great Pyrenees puppy. She is very sweet and very smart. She has been doing exceptionally well with potty training. She is submissive with my 2 Chihuahuas when eating although sometimes she does but in and is in the process of being taught to wait her turn if she wants to dine with them.

She is good with our 2 cats although they aren't fond of her but do tolerate her bouncing around quite well. The past two days she has started showing some agression when she doesn't want to do what she is expected to do.

Yesterday after a lot of play time in the yard with me and the other dogs; she wanted to lay in the grass. I called her to come and this time she just wasn't going to come. So, I walked over and picked to her up to go in the house. I guess when she finally realized I was taking her in the house she started wiggling, growling and nipping. I barked NO @ her and this only made her mad. This has not been her normal behavior. We feed her on a schedule and often if she sees the other dogs eating (later in the evening) she of course wants to partake. My other dogs are not food aggressive so they will eventually let her eat their food. When I caught her eating theirs, I stepped in between the bowl and her and nudged her out of the way (she was okay with that), but she came back for more and this time when I nudged her I got the growl and this time bite (not nip). Scolding her again only made her growl again and try to bite. I'm not sure if she is actually aggressive or just trying to show me she is the boss; not me.

I didn't get to see her mother although I did watch her play with her littermates. She wasn't a bully and she wasn't shy. She was more go with the flow and hello. I do feel she was taken away a bit to soon from her mother but want to teach her how to behave and teach her not to bite. She does like to chew on our hands and I immediately either walk away and ignore her after barking NO or I will give her a toy to chew (she has got better with this approach).

Aggressive Nine-month old Great Pyrenees

(Dayton, OH)

We inherited our puppy from my son when the puppy was four months old. We had him neutered when he was six months old but he is very aggressive with our two male dogs who have also been neutered. One is an elderly Bichon and the other is a 6-year old Lab/Shepard mix. He has started fights with them when we are either petting them or over food. Will he outgrow this or will it only get worse?

Agressive Dachshund puppy

Since my dog was four months, I have been taking him to a group of small dogs to be socialized. He has been a joy and plays well with a variety of dogs. Recently he has started to attack younger puppies (he is 6 months old now and is not neutered yet). First it was a male puppy that was 11 weeks. Today he attacked 3 female puppies on different occasions. I put him on his back and said no and held him that way for about 30 seconds. The third attack I took him home.

Aggressive Nova Scotia Duck Toiller

by Heidi
(Rothesay nb canada)

Hello,

We have a three month old Duck Toiller. She is starting to become aggressive. Her nipping is getting out of hand and she even bit the back of my leg. When we tell her no she actually comes back at us with her teeth showing ready to bite. I tried saying OUCH really loud with a high pitch as suggested in training videos and that did nothing.

We also have a 13 year old schnauzer who she really bullies...starts out as playing then she dominates her and bites her until she cries out. She can't even walk to the water bowl with out her attacking her.

I'm not sure what else to do. I've had three dogs and none of them were like this? Please help us train this little darling so we can stop being angry with her all the time. It really sucks to not be able to enjoy your puppy

Aggressive 5 week old bull mastiff cross puppy.

by Britteny
(Christchurch, New Zealand)

Yes he's 5 weeks old and showing aggression. He has been fighting with my 11 week old Jack Russell puppy and I am pretty sure I can tell when their play fighting turns into a full on battle. The mastiff grips onto my puppy and shakes his head usually going for her neck. She is on the ground with her tail between her legs and ears right back and showing submissive teeth. He constantly growls at her. He is very dominant. Any suggestions to help prevent fighting when they grow up? the mastiff pup is my step mothers not mine.

Aggressive 1yr old beagle mix puppy

by Stacia
(Sierra Foothills, California)

I have two beagle mix female puppies a little over a year old we think and sisters. The vet says they are beagle and king charles mix. We have had them for 9 months and prior to that they were with my parents in a multi dog home for 5 months. They were found wondering in the country and they were very fearful and nervous of their surroundings. We think they were only 1-2 months when found. When we took them in they took to my two children ages 10 and 14yrs old very well. Sleeping with them and following them everywhere. They took a while to house train but are doing well. They are rarely left alone and when they are they are crated as to not destroy my home out of nervousness. They are very nervous still with new people and we are working on it. Most recently in the last month or so they have become very protective of me. When I was playing with my son he came to hug me and Lilly one female lunged at his face growling with her mouth open, her nose hit his forehead. No bite but scary none the less. The next time my husband leaned down to kiss me and she lunged for his hand in the same manner. Last night we had company over who had small children ages 2 and 4yrs old. Knowing their nervousness we put them in their crate until everyone was in the house and settled. The children had gone to the crate to introduce themselves and the pups ignored them. I let them out 30-45 minutes into the visit and they barked and were fearful but otherwise ok. After going out for bathroom break they came in and sat with me on the couch. They were no longer barking so I thought I would leave them out and watch them. They were not shaking or showing any signs of fear. The 2yr old walked calmly up to my daughter who was sitting next to me to be picked up and the same pup lunged at her. We corrected this behavior with a swat on the nose (to get her attention) and a no bad girl reprimand. I was apologizing to the parent when they both did it again. I put them promptly into the crate and thats where they remained again until the next potty break. After the next potty break (i made sure the children were downstairs and not near the dogs) I came in and before crating them led them to their water dish and while answering a question the little boy came in pushing a truck and the one dog lunged at him. I instructed him out of the room and placed the pups in the crate again. I have never dealt with this situation and dont know what to do. How do I fix this? None of the situations have anything in common other than me. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

aggressive 12 week old beagle puppy

Hi,
I have an 8 week old beagle puppy who appears to be quite dominant and will growl and bite when he doesnt like what he is being told. He will also run and bite back of legs and hands when handling him. The word 'no' appears to aggrevate him. I've tried remaining calm but have resorted to putting him in his crate to calm down when he wont stop biting. Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Beagle puppy aggression

by Sandy
(Michigan)

I have an 8 week old male beagle puppy. We have had him for about a week and he is starting to show some aggressive signs. If be decides he doesn't want to be picked up or touched he will attack. Now when I say attack I don't mean the usual puppy nip or playful bitting I mean full on dog fight attack mode. Growling bitting showing his teeth just like he is fighting for his life. I have never seen a puppy this young act this way. He LOVES my other dogs and will play with them all day long but has no interest in human interaction. I try to pet him play with him cuddle him love him anything and he will either attack me and then walk away and go lay down somewhere or he will just walk away and go lay down somewhere. Please help I really love this dog I just want him to love me back!

Aggressive Beagle Mix

by Sam
(Plainfield, CT)

Hello,
I rescued a beagle mix puppy who is approximately 12 weeks old. Recently her nipping has turned into harder biting. We have tried the dog 'yelp' noise and 'NO' when she bites too hard. Any biting is an immediate time out. Today, she has been biting incredibly hard. We have started the bitter apple spray.
We discovered she has a parasite and is on 3 medications to get rid of it. Would that have anything to do with the increase in aggression? What ways can we curb this aggression? Once she receives all her shots we want to get her trained as a therapy dog and that can't be done with biting behaviors.

Aggressive beagle puppy.

by Kelly
(Painesville ohio)

We have two beagle puppies who are 10 weeks old . Everything was fine until one got sick and diagnosed with parvo virus and almost died. He was gone for seven days and when we brought him back home after about 4 days his brother got aggressive toward him. He likes to attack him and bite him mean fully. He will also attack me and bit my arm with punctures and bruising. We cannot have the smaller one around him to play. We have been trying to keep them separate because the smaller is very vulnerable and is still trying to recover and get his weight back on. I am very stressed and at my wits end and don't know how to fix this. The bigger one does get reprimanded but it is not working and he still continues to bite me when he cannot get to his brother. Any suggestions??

Worried about my beagles aggression

by Nuala
(Ireland)

I have a 5 month old beagle. She's very snappy and bites during play time she's not being aggressive when doing this even though it can hurt. Tonight she put a empty tea light in her mouth I was trying to get her to drop it and she wouldn't. I thought she might cut herself with it. As I tried to take it out she started growling at me. When I got it out she went for me she jumped up and bite my upper arm and wouldn't let go. I was shaking with fear. I just put her out in the garden. I'm so upset and angry. Once before she went for my husband when she had a bone in her mouth it was not near as bad as this. What should I do?
