snarling lab-pit 7 week old puppy

by Laurie B.
(Cincinnati, Ohio)

My son just adopted a young puppy. My concern is he was too young when he was taken from his mom. We do not know his story. He was at our house this past weekend and we have 2 older dogs. A 10 month old chocolate lab and a 2 year old boxer-lab-pit mix. He seems to do well with our dogs and our female mix who has had a litter of puppies seems to do well putting him in his place. Every now and then when the humans are interacting with him he snarls and tries to bite. We have been trying to put him on his side and let him know his behavior is not acceptable. 4 years ago we took in what we thought was a pure bread boxer but he turned out to be some kind of a mix and he never became a calm dog. After working with him for 2 years we realized he must have been mixed bread and had aggressive issues. We finally put him down after he bit our son on the face for no reason. I'm sure we are quick to assume the worst but hope for the the best. We are truly dog loving people!!!!!!!!!!

Employ the nothing in life is free approach
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
