Sad Fosterer

by Von
(UK)

Lilly is a 7 year old Jack Russell Terrier, who was a stray for 4 months until finally caught. She was in a terrible physical state, which is now resolved but she suffers from fear aggression. She is afraid of heavy lorries and buses and will try to run away. She is also frightened of motor bikes, but will chase them if given a chance. She is frightened of men and will cower and shy away if they come towards her, but will rush up and bite their ankles as they walk away. She rushes after large dogs and snarls, but has never actually bitten one.

I am reluctant to use aversion (spray collar etc.) with her as I think this could end up making her more afraid than she already is.

All in all Lilly is a sad little dog, who is affectionate and easy to deal with in the home, showing no food or possessive aggression and she will allow us to do anything with her. She deserves a great forever home, but I am afraid that no one will take her because of her fear aggression.

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
