Overprotective Weimaraner

My 6yr old Weimaraner is very protective of me. I have a family of 4. My husband walks within 5 feet of me and the dog is up and running to my side. He is like that with my oldest son who is 14 and when I call out my son's name the dog comes running to me. The dog has actually nipped my oldest son in the rear end in the past, not drawn blood, and also grabbed my husbands hand with his mouth, but not bitten down. My husband is not too fond of the dog. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old. So he has always been accustomed to being with us in our home. My youngest son is an animal whisperer of sorts, and the dog loves him. However, the other day, the dog was in his crate, (we always leave the door open so he can come and go as he wishes) and he was gnawing on a bone, and the 8 yr old came to the crate, and the dog growled at him. He was just wanting to pet him and give him a kiss. I have always trained him to be ok with us picking up his food bowl and bones/toys at any given time, so this new behavior is concerning. I really do not want to rehome the dog, he is relatively a good dog overall, but this behavior is disturbing. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

You Have a Respect Issue
by: Adam G. Katz

Hi,

You'll need to start by asking yourself two questions:

1. Does the dog understand that the dog aggression is unwanted behavior?

and

2. If he understands that he shouldn't be aggressive, then he's choosing to ignore me. In which case, you have a respect issue.
Get a prong collar and a six foot leather leash and learn how to correct your dog in a safe and humane manner. I can guarantee that you'll see an almost immediate, dramatic improvement. Check out DogProblems.com to learn more.

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
