help. my gsd attacks other dogs

Hey people. Ive grew up with gsd's and rottweilers as a kid so have experience in large breed dogs. I have my wife and 3 children ages 5, 9 & 12. So I decided to have a look for a puppy gsd. A working line straight back gsd. So I found a good breeder and picked my 13 week old male pup with a great bloodline. Mother and farther were in Germany as police dogs then imported to Britain as security dogs. When I got him home I tought him tricks where he is in the pecking order in my household. I socialized him with people, children and dogs. He loves children could run around a field with 20 children happy as Larry. But when he was a pup on several times he kept getting attacked by other dogs really badly. And now that hes older, bigger and stronger any dog he sees he wants to attack it. Just turns into a different dog and goes crazy. So I had to muzzle him and then one day he saw another dog in the next field and bang he was gone charging towards this other dog. If it wasn't for that muzzle he would of killed the poor thing. Im thinking that its because he was attacked as a puppy he sees other dogs as a threat. Also my friend has just got a puppy lab and I was thinking of putting a muzzle on my gsd and hold the pup in my arms so my dog can get the cent of it then each day bit by bit let them get closer so hopefully my gsd sees its not a threat. Any suggestions would be great. Simon..

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

Dog Aggression

Yes-- you can fix this. It's what we call "dog aggression" (in contrast to handler aggression).
You need to focus on two things:

1. Teach your dog to walk on a loose leash around all distractions. If she's on a loose leash, she cannot be paying attention to you and the other dog at the same time. It's either one or another, and if the leash is loose, then she has to watch you because she cannot FEEL from the tension in the leash, where you are.

2. You'll need to learn how to give a motivational correction, so that she clearly understands that this behavior is unacceptable. If she already knows that it's unacceptable, then the issue is that your correction is not firm enough, or you're not using the proper training collar (or it isn't fitted correctly!)
