Reading the previous posts , some mistakes have been made with our 1 1/2 year old male Great Dane "Waylon" Over the course of the last two weeks, I have been attacked by him, four times.
He is an otherwise mellow, loving dog. The first occasion was with a chew toy he had in his mouth. My hand was close to his mouth and he gashed my left little finger, requiring stitches. Later that day, I was in a recliner, he approached from behind on my right, put his head on armrest, growled and again went for my hand, gashing me severely requiring a second ER visit and more stitches.
This past week, resting again in the recliner, on waking, he again lunged upon me and attacked, TWICE.
I now have multiple cuts on both arms/hands.
All we can figure is something about my being in the chair triggers this.
We use a spray water bottle to reinforce "NO!", and have not struck or hit him.
We hope to consult with a behaviorist/trainer. The hint about height and perceived dominance must be used.
We've had him since he was about 8 weeks old or so. Playing with him, it was matter of fact to be on the floor and him mouthing me, but never bitten.
He has not been neutered. We will consult vet for opinion regarding effect on behavior.
