Food Aggressive Bluetick Coonhound

by Ashley
(Defiance Ohio)

I would greatly appreciate any and all advice on this situation. I have 2 Bluetick Coonhounds, they are inside dogs, both Neutred and are very affectionate. They are 9 Months old and around 85lbs. They go everywhere i go and they have a lot of people and dog interaction. I have helped raise them both since birth. I know that niether of them have been deprived of food or have never been mistreated.

Gunner is fine during feeding time. However Jagger is sometimes very aggressive. I keep them seperated during feedings and have worked with them since birth, by playing with their food and by touching them and letting them associate me with their food. I make sure I eat before the dogs. I have also made him sit before he gets his food. Trying to establish that I am the Alpha. But what gets me is that for days and weeks at a time i will have no problem with him... can walk by, touch him, talk to him and move his food if need be and there will be no problem. HOWEVER it can switch in an hour or so and the next time he is growling and showing his teeth and barking and will NOT calm down. I tell him to sit and try to talk him down. Sometimes this works and others he will continue to get more aggressive. and at that point the only thing i can do grab his collar, lay him down and put my weight on him and talk to him and rub him and get him to relax.

I'm trying to do this all the right way and TRULEY need some help. NOTHING i am doing is working. I am afraid he is going to bite someone, because everyone knows how sweet he is and i hate living on edge when the food is out. I do not want this to escalate into something worse. He is my baby and i am terrified if it does not stop i am going to have to get rid of him and it would break my heart. He is not an aggressive dog any other time and he is very good at commands and listening.

Aggressive Siberian Husky

by Chloe
(Wilkes-Barre)

My husky Oreo is the nicest cutest dog she is so playful and friendly, but when it comes to food and treats the story changes. If she has something near her that she took or got you can't even move your foot without her threatening to bite you. Now I understand that before we got her the people before us had 3 other male puppies the same age as her and she had to fight for everything. So I see why she is so mean. She is going on 4 now and we still can't tame her, please help.

Aggressive Puppy

by Joe
(Columbia, MD)

When we first got our mix puppy he had a slight amount of food agression, but I cured him of that. Well I thought I did. He recently got sick and we had to feed him chicken and rice. This started the agression all over again. This time it was worse then ever. He even tried lunging towards me when I walked by him. I was able to take the food away from him and put him in his kennel. Later that night I fed him his normal dry food, there was some slight agression, but I was able to cure him of it again by feeding him by hand. Later that same night he was laying on his bed, I went to pet him, he would growl. The more I pet him trying to have him stop he would get more angry. To the point where he actual lunged at me. I yelled At him and put him in his kennel for the night.

Our puppy is only four months and this is something I would like to cure him of now but I am out of ideas.

Reagan - My Food Guarding Dog

by Craig W.
(Niantic CT)

Reagan is a rescue cocker spaniel. He is food guarding and will not let anyone near his food. Also he nips at your hands when you pet him. Will settle down from this and let you pet him. I have tried saying no and not bite and push him away but he keeps trying to nip. I have gotten him to work on the commands sit, stay, leave it. and down. on leash and some off leash but is distracted sometime. Using treats and praise for obeying and he has responded to that well.

The food guarding is the real problem. Down loaded and printed out you six stage food guarding instructions and will start that in a few days.

Thank You

food aggressive behavior in my beagle

by alex
(bishop, ca)

Hi, my one year old female displayed aggression to me yesterday, growling and even snapping, which she has never done before; this was over her breakfast. When she came to me 8 months ago, she displayed aggression to my older dog and the cat, which is reduced and under control. But yesterday, she didnt gobble up her food right away which is normal for her. she walked away leaving some food in the dish, which is not unusual. but when i walked by she growled at me and went to her dish. i smacked her butt and she growled and snarled more and snapped at me. i used something to push her away from her dish and took it away from her. as soon as i took it she became apologetic. it was like her inner wolf came out. she is my fifth dog. ive never had a dog do that before. shes never acted like that before. Since then, i have not put any chicken, chicken fat or Freshpet in her food, but have given her only dried. She has eaten it. I wont leave it for her if she doesnt eat it up, i will take her plate away when/if she walks away from it.

by Mel
(Mooresville, NC)

Husky (siberian) is around 12+, she has recently gotten overly protective of her food and water, sometimes toys... is this normal for an older dog?
