Aggressive towards my boyfriend

by Erin

My GSD (Grizzly), who is a little over a year old, is starting to show extreme aggression towards my boyfriend of 3 years. Both my boyfriend and I had him since he was 6 weeks, and he was great until suddenly within the past few weeks. He's a great dog when it's just me, but he seems to get overly jealous when my boyfriend hugs me after coming home from work. Simple things like holding hands or being close, and Grizzly just starts barking and lunging. Also, when I'm in camp and it's just my boyfriend and Grizzly, they're fine. Grizzly doesn't get aggressive, but as soon as I come home, it's like he turns into a different dog and just hates my boyfriend. He isn't nurtured, so I think that might be an issue. Tonight he came into our bedroom, and literally just walked over to my boyfriend and bit him. Not hard, but enough for my boyfriend to jerk away which then caused him to bite more, so I had to kick him out of our room. Any other ideas about what else is going on with him?

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

Dog Aggression

Yes-- you can fix this. It's what we call "dog aggression" (in contrast to handler aggression).
You need to focus on two things:

1. Teach your dog to walk on a loose leash around all distractions. If she's on a loose leash, she cannot be paying attention to you and the other dog at the same time. It's either one or another, and if the leash is loose, then she has to watch you because she cannot FEEL from the tension in the leash, where you are.

2. You'll need to learn how to give a motivational correction, so that she clearly understands that this behavior is unacceptable. If she already knows that it's unacceptable, then the issue is that your correction is not firm enough, or you're not using the proper training collar (or it isn't fitted correctly!)
