Aggressive Schitzu adult dog

by Sherry H.
(Knoxville, Tn.)

My dog is a 9 year old schitzu male named Ringo and he is making my life miserable. We can't have anyone come to our house because of his behavior. He barks aggressively when someone comes to the door, jumps on people when they walk in and if they sit down he jumps all over them.

One very weird thing we have not been able to figure out is when people leave our house he charges after them, barking, as they are going out the door.

One time a child was in our home and he started playing with Ringo. after a few minutes of calm play, the child got down in his face and Ringo snapped at his face and bit him on the nose. Thankfully it was just a scratch but I was terrified the little boy was hurt.

There are many other problems. He will pee on my flower pots on the front porch. When he goes out to pee he will run back on the front porch and then poop on the porch. This is not all the time. Sometimes he goes in the yard. when we are outside sitting on the porch, he barks at every car that passes by. I am at the point of getting rid of my dog but I can't stand the thought of something bad happening to him.

I have no idea how to train this dog. Is training collars cruel in your opinion?

My family hates my dog. PLEASE help me.

Desperate,
Sherry

Nothing In Life Is Free

Hi, Sherry:

Your problem is that your dog didn't get a motivational correction for exhibiting the aggressive behavior.

It will happen, again. Plan on it. Be prepared, and have a way to administer a motivational correction, when it happens-- so that Ringo knows in no uncertain terms: This behavior will not be tolerated. I go into more detail on how to do this, in my book.

In addition: Start teaching him obedience training exercises, and make him do behaviors he doesn't want to do. (Ex. Down-stays around distractions and making him stay down). That builds dominance/leadership and makes your corrections more meaningful.
