Aggressive Rat Terrier

by Deb
(Peru,Il)

We have a 6 year old rat terrier she has been with use for 3 months. She does good if you are one on one but she has started attacking, biting, & barking at my other family dogs. A pom pom, chi, & rat terrier. She is getting worse everyday her behavior is awful, but we can not get rid of her or take her to a shelter that would not be fair to her. She was left alone in a house for 6 months with no human contact other then some one feeding her & walking her once a day. She has good days & bad day but she is a wonderful dog .. What can I do to help her?

Be A Pack Leader
by: Adam G. Katz

Your problem is that your dog didn't get a motivational correction for exhibiting the aggressive behavior.

You need to:

1. Establish yourself as the pack leader.

2. Put all dogs on a "Nothing In Life Is Free" program.

3. Do not leave the dogs together unsupervised.

4. Get all dogs fixed/neutered/spayed.

5. Keep a leash and collar on all dogs, when you're with them-- so that you can start correcting the aggression.

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
