3 year old moody-aggressive female

by Heidi
(Sacramento, Ca)

Hi, I recently adopted a 3 year old female german shepherd from the pound. We introduced her to our other dogs and at first, she seemed okay, if a bit apprehensive. But now we have had her for around 3 months and she seems to become increasingly more aggressive the longer she is here. She is very single minded, constantly sniffing the other dogs and pushing up against them. She is obsessed. It's so strange though, one minute all of the dogs (including the GSD) will be lounging around the house either napping or just laying down, and then all of a sudden my GSD will become rowdy, i usually take her outside when i notice this, but then the other dogs will get playful, then the dogs are all rough housing, and then my GSD will just start mauling one of the other dogs! its happened 3 times now and i am honestly scared for the safety of my other dogs. I don't know what to do, she is such a sweet dog, very obedient when it doesn't come to the other dogs, and she was obviously taught some tricks. I have formed a huge attachment to her and couldn't imagine sending her to a shelter. The pound said she was a stray and someone just found her on the street, so i have no idea what kind of life she had. I don't want to give her up, but i have to think about the safety of my other dogs. I'm pretty desperate. if anyone knows of some kind of training program for GSD near the Sacramento area, or even some helpful tips on how to deal with this behavior, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Nothing In Life Is Free

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
