My puppy suddenly jumped on a woman's back and nipped at her coat in the park

by Megan
(Dundee)

My 5 month old golden labrador was off lead today in the park, there was no dogs or people really about but a woman walked past in the distance and he ran to her and jumped at her back and nipped her coat. It was really out of the blue, I managed to get him back on the lead quickly and calm him down. He sometimes tears and my clothing or me but has in the last few weeks has generally stopped now that he is starting to get his adult teeth. I thought his behaviour had been coming on really well recently and this incident has scared me, I don't want to walk on eggshells when I'm out with him, normally he is great with people and other dogs, it's the first time he has ever done that, I just don't know what to do about it. I don't want to muzzle him but then I don't anything bad to happen to him, the woman walked on without saying anything earlier, I think I got to him quickly enough but it has taken me aback.

Thanks,
Megan

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
