Bernie too aggressive

by David
(Wisconsin)

Bernie is a 5 month old Rottweiler male. Most of the time he is very calm and loving. But there are times when he gets really cranked up, barking incessantly, charging around the house and coming at my wife with open mouth. When told no, he will start running around. Bernie does get plenty of exercise and attention from us. For the most part he responds to the no or the growl, but when he gets excited, he can get a little crazy. I have found that the best way to get his attention and come to me is by offering food, and then I crate him until he calms down. I believe a lot of this behavior is a function of its puppyhood, but my wife is afraid that he is aggressive. Other aspect of his training like leash training hand Sit Stay commands and so on are going pretty well. He is in a puppy class at the local Kennel Club where he is always attentive cooperative and obedient.

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
