Agressive play

by Linda
(Murfreesboro, Tennessee)

I have two 7 month old mixed breed rescue dogs. They have been with us for about 4 months. The male appears to have boxer in him, the female has pit. They love each other dearly, but when they play outside the male dog ends up drawing a little blood nearly every time. They just play too roughly. We have tried muzzling them, but I want to teach him that this aggressive behavior is wrong. How do I do this?

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
