We "rescued" a pit pup a little over 3 weeks ago. She is amazing! The vet puts her at about 7 months old and we no nothing about where she came from. She is training well but from the begining, she was very aggresive to my 3 cats. She has calmed down considerable after some training with (minimal use)of a shock collar and much firm corrections and constant positive affirmations when she behaves well.

She now tries to play with them but tends to get excited and scares them. At times, she is even affectionate toward them. But she is very jealous! I am constantly paying extra attetnion to her but at times she gets very aggresive and bites at them. I fear when she gets bigger she may hurt one of them seriously if we cannot overcome this jealousy. She is going in two weeks to be spayed but I am not sure this will address the jealousy. Am I being too impatient?

Prong Collar

Yes-- you can fix this. It's what we call "dog aggression" (in contrast to handler aggression).

You need to focus on two things:

1. Teach your dog to walk on a loose leash around all distractions. If she's on a loose leash, she cannot be paying attention to you and the other dog at the same time. It's either one or another, and if the leash is loose, then she has to watch you because she cannot FEEL from the tension in the leash, where you are.

2. You'll need to learn how to give a motivational correction, so that she clearly understands that this behavior is unacceptable. If she already knows that it's unacceptable, then the issue is that your correction is not firm enough, or you're not using the proper training collar (or it isn't fitted correctly!)
