Aggressive German Shorthair Pointer

by Audrey
(Utah)

I have a 4 1/2 month old GSP. He has always been nippy and still likes to bite when played with. When we first got him he had a little possessive aggression when it came to his food, but is completely cured of that. He would occasionally get aggressive over something he had that we were trying to get from him. We've been working with him and haven't had any problems for awhile, until today when he got really aggressive after stealing some pancakes off the counter. It was the deep belly growl, ears back, bark and lunge when you went near him. I was out of the house getting something from a neighbor when it happened but he actually bit my daughter when she tried to get the bag from him and tried to get my husband when we returned.
Is this kind of aggression something that can be fixed? I cannot have a puppy that will attack my children when he wants something. Besides the play biting, he is usually so sweet. I'm at a loss! Please help!

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
