Untrainable Dog - I Love This Idiot!

by Brad
(Iowa)

I have a four month old Black Lab/ Jack Russel mix male puppy, totally untrainable moron. The only command I have been able to get him to understand is "sit" when I have something he wants.

He barks, he bites and runs totally rampant thru the house. I've had a variety of dogs before, but never have I found such a challenge as this one little pup.

His temperment can change in an instant. One minute he's calm and the next he's bouncing off the furniture. I've never had to strike a dog before to train him and I never planned to, but this dog asks for it and loves it. It's all part of a game for him. He wants a big playmate to fight with.

At four months I can't understand his need for dominance. Usually at this time puppies are searching for acceptance. HELP? I'm hoping he's not brain damaged. He is a beautiful dog.

Keep a training collar and tab on him...
by: Adam G. Katz

Hi, Brad:

Please don't hit him.

You're going to want to keep a training collar and tab (short leash) on him, at all times-- when you're with him and he's not in the crate.

If you don't have an effective, motivational way to let him know that he's done something wrong, then you're not in a position to educate him. So-- keep the training collar and tab on him... at least until he's learned the house rules.
