Aggressive tendencies in 9 week old pomeranian?

His name is Thor and sometimes he can be quite a handful.

It seems he doesn't really have bite inhibition and we are trying to teach him that. He bites a lot when he plays which I know is normal and when it's too hard we put him in the bathroom as a time out for a minute or two.
This was suggested by a pom site. It seems to work for a little while, that he realizes if he gets too rough the "good" thing "play" and us, will go away. But, he always bites when you try to pet him too. The second he sees a hand the jaws start going. I joke we should rename him Jaws!

Really we can't do anything - bathe, pet, snuggle, brush etc without him just trying to bite. Most of the time it's not in an aggressive manner but it can be very hard with those sharp little teeth. He also goes after faces. Our 19 month old son has been bit on the nose a few times. This scares me.

Next is what I fear to be aggression. Thor maybe 3-4 times a day will get too hyped up playing and bite too hard. I will go to pick him up to put him in his "time out" and he will growl very aggressively and bare his teeth. He will thrash around in my hands and just go nuts! Once we make it to the bathroom he calms down and squeals until he is let out and then acts normal.

Is this maybe some sign of aggression I should be worried about?

I'm a stay at home mom so I really have all day to work with him and establish myself, son and husband as the pack leaders. I am doing all the tips I found on a pomeranian site, but still worried he may have a problem.

How can I get him to stop nipping too? We would like to be able to pet our dog without him trying to nip our hands.

What's funny is we just went from a 50lb Chow Chow (R.I.P. Chewie 14 yrs old) to a 3 lb Pom and the Chow was easier to train and more calm. We even found our Chow 14 years ago under a tree abandoned when he was 2 weeks old. He had no mother or litter mates to learn anything from and was the most gentle dog in the world. Even with our son and our cat. Thor the Pom is older than when we found Chewie and is harder to train.

"aggressive sleeping pomeranian puppy"

by Susan
(Waterloo, Ontario, Canada)

We have a ten year old pom that has been fantastic!! Never was aggressive in any way and loved by all.

We just got our second pom which is a toy, and he's smart and adorable and easy to train, however, when he is sleeping whether at night or during the day will be aggressive if disturbed.

He is unpredictable and will nip (sometimes breaking the skin) but we have let him know that we are stronger and bigger and are able to settle him. It is very troubling though, gives us an uneasyness.

He is 6 months old now, but I am unsure if this behavior will ever stop. Even if my husband or sons come in the house with a winter coat on or big boots, he is obviously scared and will bark at them almost every time.

Since he is so different from our first dog, I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Aggressive 7 Month Old Pomeranian

by Maria
(Michigan)

My puppy comes from my daughters litter and has lived in a house with one older cat and a younger 1 year old active cat. He played for hours the first 3 months of this life with the cat. 2 months ago, when he was about 4 months old, my daughter and I were going to be gone 1 day of the week for about 14 hours and I did not want him to be alone for that long so I put him in a doggie daycare with other pups. The first facility, listed as being the best in my county, was actually putting him in a cage for 6 of the 9 hours he was there. He became agitated and bite me and other family members when he came home. I crate him on trips and he can sleep in his crate which is open and he does, but when I am gone during the day he did not get crated without the ability to get out, he remained in the bathroom with water, a puppy pad, toys and the crate. This worked well and currently he does not even do on the pad but goes out before I leave and then when I come home.

The basic point is that he will growl and bite others in the home, whenever people come and I can't have a dog like that. He has even got more agressive in the last month, after having him neutered, which is the oppositve of what is supposed to happen. He sees his mother and brother at times and can play for a bit, however he gets really crazy at times and I need help.

Aggressive Pom

by L. Ross
(Baton Rouge)

This dog was given to me roughly one hour ago..I was told she is a Senior Pom. She allows me to pet and rub her. She allows me to take the leash on and off. She allowed me to give a dog treat. But the moment I tried to pick her up she tries to bite me. What is wrong. What do I do?
