Agressive Black Lab / Collie Mix

by Michelle
(Milwaukee, WI)

Hi,

We have a 6 month old black lab / possibly border collie mix that we rescued 4 months ago. He's a very smart dog and has learned "the basics" very quickly. We have one major problem with him that we don't know how to fix.

Whenever my fiance' or I walk out of the bedroom or towards the sliding door to go outside, he begins biting our ankles and pant legs. We're aware that he's part herding dog, so he's just "doing his job" and quickly stops with the basic "NO". The problem is, after that, he'll begin growling, showing his teeth, barking, and jumping up and biting whatever he can get ahold of. He submits quickly at times but other times he'll keep going.

We recently started obedience classes that are offered free through the shelter we got him from, he goes to his first class this weekend. I'm afraid that they won't work, although our trainer is very confident that he's not aggressive, but has severe separation anxiety as he whines when we leave the room (he's crate trained).

I'm desperate to find something that will stop him from growling, barking, and biting us when we're walking through the apartment. HELP!

Aggressive 13wk. Black Lab/ Pit.

by Kelly
(Hemet, Ca.)

We adopted our puppy a week ago today. The problem is his biting. The puppy is very aggressive towards our 8yr. old son. My son was helping with yard work, out of nowhere our puppy ran up and started nipping our son. It was pretty bad! (left bruises) This is not the first time. Please help! I would really hate to take puppy back to the shelter.

Aggressive 3 month Old Lab/Pit Bull mix

I have owned many dogs and have never encountered a puppy like this one. She is 3 months and appears to be very vicious towards my Airedale. She bares her teeth, bites at her face and neck, acting like an adult dog in a fight. I have never seen this before.

I am confident my Airedale could put her down if she wanted but she is a very timid Airedale (I have had many comments about this from different kennels and daycares).

I am not sure if I should be concerned at all on this? and what to do to correct it if necessary?

Any advice would be great.

Aggressive 7 month old Labradoodle

We have a 7 month old male neutered Labradoodle puppy who has been a very great pet for our household, which includes three small children. My 8 and 10 year old are always in charge of feeding him. Tonight, after putting the food in his bowl, my 10 year old daughter started petting our dog on the head. He immediately looked at her and started growling, then right away bit her fingers and broke skin. I saw the whole thing, and ran out to punish him. I was in complete shock, because we have always pet him/rubbed his face, etc while eating to get him used to this. And we've had him since he was 8 weeks old! When I went out, yelling no, and got close enough to grab him, he turned and bit me as well! Then he ran to the corner of the yard. My husband heard the commotion, saw my daughter and I bleeding, and ran over to beat his bottom. Instead of acting submissive, or as if he had done anything wrong, he immediately got aggressive with my husband as well, and bit him through the skin. He has always seen my husband as the alpha male, and is so submissive to him in general, so when he went crazy biting him after biting us, we were shocked.

We do not feel comfortable having him around our children now, and are so upset. He has never shown one ounce of aggression before, and we do not know what is going on. My husband wants to get rid of him right away, but I just wonder if there's a way to help him first.

What should we do?

Territorial Aggressive Labrasheppard Puppy

by Kris
(Crete,Greece)

Our puppy is 3 monts old and I have him already 1 month.

As he lives outside and is chained to his dog house, I belive that this is the reason why he is agressive and protective in case somebody approaches him (except me and my husband).

He is very fearful of walks, other people and other dogs...so the socializing process that I tryed with him, did not went very smoothly as he even refused to go out of the yard to meet other people or animals.

How to socialize a puppy that is afraid? How to make clear to a puppy that we are not expecting him to guard?

Also I belive that some people when I was not around made a wrong attempts to meet our puppy, running towards him, yelling his name and try to pat him on the head..some even laugh and do dog voice when he backed down..

I hope I can fix the start which was made wrong and to teach him to like people and not to be afraid.

He is tied up on the 1.5 m chain at the moment, while we are at work. We let him loose 4 times per day and take him on a walk. Also playing time per day is about 2 hours.

I think that he would be less hyperactive and fearful if he would live with us in the house, but my husband does not allow that.

I must also add here I live in Crete island, and I noticed that people attend to take their pets like guard dogs without any needs or ...anyway to locals atitude is not very good towards to animals...

I am from Estonia and for us the dog is usually like a member of the family. As dealing with the dog here is not very often...also thats why the schools for dogs start from 1000 eur...which is a huge amount of money.

Please any advise! I am reading books and im more than willing to deal with my puppy and teach him.

Thank you!

Aggressive pitbull/lab puppy

I have an eleven week old pitbull/lab rescue and she is normally very loving and sweet with the occasional bite that's not a playful nip or mouthing. But she has moments when she gets very vicious and it comes at random or when she is overtired or hungry or needs to go to the bathroom. These vicious spells last for a short amount of time then she calms down, but she want to bite everyone even when we try to walk away and ignore the behavior. After she gets vicious like this she usually mellows out and becomes her normal self. I don't know what to do.

Aggressive Rescued Labradoodle Puppy

by Flora

One week ago yesterday I adopted a 9 week old labradoodle, Maci. She weighed about twelve pounds. Within a day or two we noticed that she would clamp down when playing. Her puppy teeth really hurt. This is concerning because I have twin boys who are almost 5 years old. My one son, Max, has been interested in walking, brushing and feeding the pup. My other son, Owen, has not had interest beyond playing and petting.

At first we tried replacing bites with toys, which we have plenty of, but she'll switch to a hand or pants quickly. Even when we are not playing Maci wants to bite pants and legs.

We met a dog trainer in the park. We took her card and she made a house call a few days later. She is concerned, too. She showed me how to hold the dog either by its lower or upper jaw or behind the dogs neck just near her ears. She was surprised how long it took to get Maci to submit and calm down. I have been trying this but I'm not too good at it and feel myself getting too angry at her aggression. Part of me thinks that it is making her more aggressive. I have been able to get her to sit then go down on command this does seem to get her out of the aggressive mode temporarily. She then waits for a treat. When she stays calm a give her another.

She is not possessive around food or if you try to take something from her. She loves other dogs and people and actively tries to get to them and play when she sees them.

I'd appreciate advice on which method to use when she begins to bite. Holding her down with seems to incite her anger more of just seperation and a big No and sit then down.

Thanks, Flora

Overall Aggressive 5 Month Old Lab.

I've grown up with labs my whole life. I took in a female black lab puppy when she was 8 weeks old and she lives at my apartment with me. She is the most aggressive dog I've ever had. I know she is still young, but no matter what I do, she can't control her aggression. She bites my hands, skin, ankles (she goes straight for my ankles the most), face, every bit of skin she can get.

She's crate and potty trained so I know she can be trained, I just haven't found the right way. I've tried ignoring her, squeling and saying "Ow!", redirecting her attention to appropriate toys, growling at her as if I'm the momma dog, putting my thumb under her tongue... everything just makes her want to bite more. Everytime I take her out on a leash she yanks and pulls and runs circles around me and growls. She goes straight for my feet once I tell her "No!"

I don't know what to do. Please help!
How do I fix this problem?

Aggressive Nipping From a 6 Month Old Female Lab

by Matt
(Bridgewater, NJ)

Hi,

We have a 6 month old female lab. She is fixed. We have an issue with her where she jumps at us and does some aggressive nipping (nipping our legs, hands, clothes, anything she can). I am not sure if she is doing this out of dominance, or because she wants attention, or what.

She also has an issue with us sitting on the floor with her or on the couch, where she tries to jump on it with you and wants to jump on you (which often escalates into mouthing or nipping). What tips do you have for preventing some of this behavior?

We try to give her a lot of exercise. She doesn't seem to have a problem with strangers, though she does tend to do a little bit of jumping.

Very shy and aggressive 3 month old labrador

by Luz
(Seattle)

Hi, i have a 3 month old lab puppy and he is very aggressive with other people. He only likes us, me, my husband and our 2 kids. When we go outside for walks and someone wants to get close he barks like crazy! When we go to the vet and they try to take him inside he barks a lot and try to bite the vet. He jumps on them and try to bite them.

He loves playing with other puppies a lot! His problem is just with people... I have never seen a puppy like him. We take him to puppy classes and all the puppies are sooo friendly with everyone except my puppy :(

Aggressive Labarador Retriever

Hello,

My name is Ruby, we have and 8 week old Labrador retriever named Chase, we've had him for 2 weeks now. The first few days we brought him home he was shy and intimidated because he was away from his litter, it didn't take too long for him to adjust. My husband, kids and myself automatically try making him feel as comfortable as possible, we play with him and show him lots of loved. However, he seems to be getting a little aggressive, more so with my kids.

I spend most days with him, I have been working on house training him and it has been going pretty well, he does have occasional accidents, but I think he's kinda getting the hang of it and is starting to go towards the door when he has to go. With me he does not growl as much or bite, when he does, I automatically correct him. I am constantly following him around the house, making sure he's not biting on anything he's not suppose to, I play with him and he's catching on to the word "NO." The problem is, he shows more aggressiveness towards my kids, every time they want to play with him he gets too wild and starts trying to bite on them and if they try to correct him, Chase just growls at them and still tries to bite and I have to step in. I know he's still small and that's his way of playing, but I do not want him to get out of control and I want my kids to be able to play with him without Chase getting so wild with them. What can I do to start reinforcing his behavior?

Agressive Lab Shepard mix

by Melodee B
(Overland Park, Ks)

My daughter has a 10 week old lab shepard mix. She is doing the usual nipping. She becomes very agressive with other dogs. Her voice changes and sounds vicious and she lunges. My daughter is trying to be very consistent with her. She does say no with nipping and has multiple teeth marks on her hands and forearms. We have never had a puppy who acts like this. What is the best method to control her behavior. The puppy seems to be either super sweet or agressive.

She also barks for lengthy periods at night. They live in an apartment so this is problematic for neighbors. Any advice? Thanks

Black Lab getting aggressive with Children

by Colleen
(Glens Falls, NY )

We have a Black Lab puppy, we got him at 6 1/2 weeks. he is now 6 months old. Hehas always tried being a very "HUman" dominate dog when allowed. We took him to puppy training which has really helped. We have also inrolled him into doggie day care where he goes about 3 days a week and on weekends we have play dates at the dog park.

Just recently he has turned aggressive towards the children in our home, we have 3 girls 12,12,10. The other day one of the 12 year olds was taking him off his leash outside and he got aggressive and tried to bite her ( I come out and he lets me take him off) he even tried to bite her while I was there watching. Then last night the 10 year old was petting him and he was fine, then all of a sudden he turned and got aggressive and snarled barked and showed his teeth to her.

Is this just puppy behavior that he is going through a phase that we need to correct, or is this the start of a problem? And how do I fix this?

Aggressive Chocolate 6 Month Old Lab

by Mary
(Vienna, VA)

I have recently inherited a chocolate lab puppy from my Aunt. 95% of the time he is a friendly loving dog. It is that 5% which is scary.

He is very aggressive when trying to take something away to the point of Kujo like behavior. Things like pens and leashes in his mouth will start with a growl and grow into baring teeth and snarls. I want to keep him but am at a loss as to how to properly re-route this behavior.

Aggressive Chocolate Lab Mix Puppy

by Lisa
(Ohio)

Dear Adam,

My husband, kids and I recently adopted a rescued chocolate-lab mix puppy. He and two of his siblings were taken from Mom at about 5 weeks of age. He's 8 weeks now. He spends most of the day in a happy, very active than very sleepy puppy state -- but about once a day he'll lash out at either me or my husband. It happens when we pick him up -- or correct something he's doing that is dangerous/not acceptable. We obviously want to correct this behavior ASAP so he can fully be part of our family.

Aggressive Black Lab Puppy

My husband and I just adopted a 3 month old black lab puppy from a local shelter. She has been very timid since we have brought her home. She will run from us while in our home. She has warmed up to me somewhat and has been playful like a puppy should be. The minute my husband walks into the room she will stop playing and will retreat to her favorite laying place. Of more concern, our puppy has very aggressively bit my husband about three times in the last week. She did this when he attempted to leash her. How can we stop this behavior. We need help!!

14 week old lab pit mix showing aggression

by Kerri

Hunter, 14 week old lab/pit mix

Hunter, 14 week old lab/pit mix

We recently adopted a puppy, actually only have had him for a few days. When we play, he'll use his front paws to grab my arm or hand to pull me to his mouth, he does playbiye and I am working on teaching him not to. We have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter and he just sees her as a puppy playmate until she starts crying an screaming for me, at which point he backs off or I distract him with a toy. I'm not worried about both if then since in always in the room and when i can't be, Hunter, out puppy, goes in is crate. He's starting to show scary signs of aggression to new people and other dogs; ie lunging, deep growling and his tail is between his legs. He hasn't had very much socialization in his earlier yrs and I'm afraid it won't change. We are looking at puppy classes and I take him on walks everyday with my daughter but most neighbors are working or not outside. I want him to be a better pup when meeting new ppl but I don't have much experience with dogs and I don't want anything bad to happen.

7 month old lab bites me

My 7 month old female lab bites me a lot.I seem to be the target for her bad behavior...not my husband or 5 year old son. I'm the only other female in the house besides her. She will come up and growl then bite. She chases me around and will bite my arms legs back and front of them...whatever she can get her mouth on. She was spayed last month. I'm worried about her biting and growling and don't know what to do! My arms and legs hurt and are bruised up:( I love my dog but her behavior is terrible lately. Any advice??

Lab / Boxer Mix- Aggressive

I have a four month old female lab boxer mix that is showing signs of aggression. When someone tries to enter our porch she goes insane! Barking, growling, hair standing up and if the person tries to reach over the small gate she tries to bite. She has also tried biting a child which surprised me for two reasons, I have 3 children of my own and she is excellent with them and I have never seen a Puppy snip at a child. I have tried holding her collar or leash thinking she would let others pet her and she still tries to bite.

What can i do to fix this problem?

Aggressive Labrador Puppy

by Jo
(Altrincham)

We have had bella a 3 month old labrador since she was 8 weeks old and her biting and nipping has increased to a level where we have had enough and don't know what to do, she mainly attacks me and my 23yr old daughter she tends to leave my husband alone.
We have tried most things yelping, saying no, coins in a tin, water spray and time out but nothing works!

These attacks can happen at anytime she will be happily playing with her toys and then the next shes jumping on us biting showing her teeth and she clamps down and you have to prize her jaw open to release your hand. Our hands and arms are full of cuts and bruises.

In other ways shes really good shes house trained, she can be very loving.

I really don't know what to do, I feel like she doesn't really like me and my daughter. So if anybody has any advice I would appreciate it.

growling 8 week old chocolate lab

My fiancé and I bought a 7 week old chocolate lab which will be 8 weeks tomorrow. She's absolutely beautiful, but when she's laying around and we move her she growls. She also growls randomly whole being handled. She hasn't bitten, but we are fearful she will sooner or later attack our newborn baby. Is it normal to want to get rid of her in fear she may have an aggressive streak? Any advice is helpful. Thank you.

Aggressive five month old yellow lab

by Danielle
(Michigan)

Hi! My family and I have a five month old yellow lab. Her name is Molly. She has been aggressive lately and we aren't sure why. She has been attacking out oldest dog who is 13 years old and a yorkie. We have everything and can not figure out how to make the aggression stop. She goes after the other dogs in the house if they go near her toys, food or if any of them start barking. It's becoming really scary and we don't know what to do. She has lots of energy still, so we try to play fetch and tug of war to let her release energy, but she still attacks. Also she has been starting to come after us. We don't know how to stop it. Can you please help us??

Thank you.

A Concerned Family.

6 Month old Lab pup barking at me

by Nidhi
(Goa, India)

Every time I tell my 6 month old lab pup to do a simple command, he starts barking and runs away from me if I come close. Backing away and telling him calmly to sit is helping, but we had another episode today when I told him to sit and stay. He came running after me as I turned my back to him and bit at my thigh.

I'm wondering exactly what the problem here might be, why he's doing this.. and also how to deal with it.
I have tried to give him time out punishments by putting him in the locked kitchen, but I'm not sure if it's making any progress.

I'm worried that he might show more aggressive signs in a few months.

Do you have any suggestions to reduce this behaviour and to control him?

Lab broke the skin

by Liah
(Va)

My lab is very mouthy we've been training " leave it" and to sit and wait before eating. That way he knows not to bite . However when he is eating something he not soppouse to like foil and we try to take it he growls and bites hard. The other day he drew blood, this really worries me. After we take the object then he gets aggressive with our feet like trying to bite through the cloth . What can I do ? Am I apporaching him wrong? He is only 9 weeks but we know he is going to be big , biting forsure won't be any way ok when he is older .

Aggressive Australian Labradoodle

by Andrew
(Sherman Oaks, CA)

Our 3 month old female Australian Labradoodle, Addie, is a great dog. She's smart, housebroken and easy to deal with. The only fault is that she bites our 6 and 7 year old boys fairly aggressively. Sometimes she is provoked and other times she just walks up to them and jumps up and bites them on the arm or back. She has drawn blood on all of us many times. Aside from putting her in her crate, saying a stern "NO" or growling (which we haven't tried), is there anything else we should be doing?

Thanks!

Agresssive 6 month old golden lab mix

by Randy
(Maryland)

About 2 weeks ago me and my family just got a 6 month old golden lab mix from a man who just couldn't have her anymore because of his young kids. Now we are a home of me a 24 year old ( Randy ) and then my mom and step- father, so no young kids. Annie ( her name ) is good for the most part but we are having problems with biting and not puppy biting, I mean real aggressive biting that has left cuts and scars all my arms and legs, it starts out as funny little nips and then when we tell her " No " in a stern voice and go lay down, she begins to growl and then it gets bad, just very aggressive hard biting and she won't stop most of the time. Over the two weeks I have tried everything from the No to turning around and ignoring her, putting her in her crate ( the man gave us that, don't know if we should use it or not ) and no she is doing it when I try and walk her on her leash, she jumps up and starts biting at me and pulling the leash and growling/barking and she won't stop. A few times I lost my temper and yelled a little just because the bites hurt bad sometimes and only twice I had to grab her not hard but hold her because she was about to bite me very very hard and hurt me. I don't know what to do. If I can't fix this, she will have to go somewhere else, I don't want that but really all my clothes and my arms and legs are torn up really bad and it just doesn't stop.

I have a little lab puppy that my friend found on the side of the road so I took her to give her a good home. She's very loving and loves to play but when she plays she bites me, pulls my hair with her teeth, bites our feet and hands ad even bites at our face. I tell her no flip her nose and even spank her and she doesn't listen to me at all. I don't know what to do because we have a toddler in the house and if she continues we can't keep her. She's a good dog other that all the biting and chewing things. How can I help her?

Aggressive 12 Month old Black Lab

by Kaitlyn Gannon
(New York )

My black lab has been very aggressive with me when taking him for walks and playing with him. When I take him for a walk he grabs his leash and puts it in his mouth and leads me to wherever he wants to go. Sometimes I bring him to the tennis courts so he can run around and play ball. He plays ball for a couple minutes and then eventually he begins to get very frustrated and starts to growl and bite my ankles. This then leads to him jumping on me and grabbing my arms with his mouth. I try to grab his neck and push him down and tell him no, but that only makes things worse. I grab my leash to re direct him and take him somewhere else. We begin to talk around for a couple minutes and then he starts to bite my ankles again and growl. It gets to a point where he becomes extremely aggressive and will not stop biting me. He latches onto my arms and keeps growling and sinking his teeth into my skin. I am very upset with his behavior and I am beginning to lose patience. He is a very sweet dog for the most part and very friendly with other dogs and other people.

I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with information on how to stop this behavior and prevent it from happening in the future.

Aggressive golden retriever puppy

My 3 month old golden puppy has been getting progressively more aggressive. He doesn't listen as often as it seemed he was in the beginning. He will nip and bite our hands when playing and barks at us. He will also not let our other 4 year old dacshund get petted or play with toys. He will nip at him as well. Aggressive Retriever Puppy

by Mark
(England)

Hi,

Our Retriever puppy is nine weeks old now and nips quite hard. We have tried most things the NO! command seems to agitate her even more as does yelping at her if you stand and ignore her she will nip at your clothes.

Is this normal in a puppy this age?

Aggressive 9 month old golden retriever

Our 9 month old golden retriever is extremely wild and aggressive. We have tried everything from obedience class to a shock collar (which I was very hesitant about doing). Nothing seems to be working with her. She jumps and bites every time we are around her. My kids are scared to go outside and play with her and my husband is at the point where he just wants to give her away!

I know she can be a good dog, because I have witnessed it. I am concerned that maybe she was seperated from her mom a little to early and this may have something to do with it.

Please help!!!!

Agressive Miniature Poodle/Golden Retriever Cross 4 month old puppy.

by Anna
(Point Cook, Victoria)

My son and daughter-in-law have left me the black bundle of fur to mind whilst they are overseas for two weeks. The puppy is 4 to 5 months old and he bares his teeth a lot, without growling, we are not sure if to pat him or is he going to bite. He seems to rule the roost, we have a Labrador/Kelpie dog, who we have had since he was 12 weeks old, he was born in July 2005, so he is no spring chicken but still very active. My son's little dog attacks him all the time. I bring out food for both of them and if I am not careful they will knock me to the ground, as was the case this morning, the little one attacking our dog to get to his food, he doesn't seem to like his puppy dry food my son bought for him, although, I was able to separate them tonight and each dog ate their own food.... why does he bare his teeth all the time and will he hurt if he bites either my dog or us, even my 23 year old son is hesitant to go near the little monster as every time we approach he bares his teeth but does not growl, only when he is attaching our dog does he seem to be biting him and growling, we have checked and couldn't find any bite marks or bleeding on our dog.... please help set out mind at ease or suggest what I can do. Both dogs are not used to sharing, the little one gets picked up and cuddled by my son and daughter-in-law, but our dog is very affectionate and is used to being the only one that gets our undivided attention, he even tries to pull me away from the fence if I am chatting to the neighbor, when I go out I pat each one at the same time, my son did the same tonight, and still the little one turns on my dog. If the Miniature Poodle/golden retriever pup, does manage to break skin, do I need to get my dog to a vet and do we need a tetanus injection. Is there anything we can do differently, it is going to be a long 2 weeks?

Aggressive Chesapeake bay retriever

by Krista W.
(Va)

I have a 6 wk old retriever pup. She gets too playful a lot and will snap and bite me or my other dog. Is this still considered play at her age? And when I say bite, she bites. She snarls and snaps and then bites and latches. How do I get her out of this? Also I got her when she was very young. She was maybe a week old, because her momma got sick, and couldnt care for her litter. I heard that this could be a factor in it.

Aggressive five month old golden retriever puppy

by Sue
(Surprise, AZ.)

We have had our puppy for three months now and I am with him the majority of the time. For about the last month or so he has been getting pretty aggressive (especially in the evening) with me snapping, barking and biting my hands. When I tell him no it gets worse and he will lunge at me. It seems as though he just wants to get my hand in his mouth.

I can tell he knows he is not supposed to bite but really seems to want to so when I say "NO " it makes him mad. I don 't believe he is really aggressive or he would show other signs as well as to other people but it makes me very frustrated because nothing I say or do makes him stop.

He always wants to hump my leg too but no one else!! He has lost a lot of teeth in the last week. I have read that this should stop soon and I really hope so. Does what he is doing sound normal or should I be worried that he might actually be getting aggressive? We had a golden that passed away last year at the age of 14 1/2 and we never had ANY problems with him. We got him as a puppy and he pretty much did everything he was told so I was not prepared for this.

Is My Golden Retriever Puppy Aggressive?

by Grace
(United States )

My 5 1/2 month old puppy bites me all the time. Or so i think. I do not think it is nipping anymore. I am 12 years old and the youngest in my family. We are all new to having a dog in the family. Our golden retriever, Daisy seems to bite me more than anyone else. We have tried SOOO many things and it almost seems everyone else in my family is making me fix her! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! Why is she biting me more? i do nothing different than the rest of my family, or so i don't think i do! :(

Please I've been looking stuff up everywhere! She was great for potty training and tricks and commands. Although when she is biting you she does not listen! The commands go through one ear and out the other. I do not and CANNOT get rid of this dog! I've been asking for a dog for 7 years and now I've gotten it! PLEASE HELP ME! ;(
