pit lab mix plays aggressively with my small kids...help

by chris

Our pit lab mix is now 9 months old. He is fixed and does know his basic commands. My main worry is how he is with small children. We have 4 from 5-15 years. He has been raised around them since he was 9 weeks old. Now that he is bigger he will jump on and bite hard on the smaller kids. I see it as aggressive play but not attacking from fear or other reasons but he gets carried away if I don't stop him. I have tried to watch him and stay between him and the kids or say no and hold him till he settles down. He seems worse with the small kids but every now and then he will get over excited and try to play tug of war with my arm! I fear him really hurting a child if I can't train him to stop this. I love this dog and need training tips for him now so this doesn't get out of control. Thanks

Nothing In Life Is Free

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
