overprotective pit mix

by Chris B.
(Salem, VA USA)

We have 2 chihuahuas, almost 9 years old (brother and sister) and adopted a 2 year old male pit mix (Saber) in April this year. Took a little while to get them to get along but they do pretty well, as a matter of fact the female chi follows Saber around all over. Saber would want to play but of course he's too big so we adopted another male pit, Gotti about 3 wks ago. The meet and greet went well. We have been keeping them separate with limited interaction to get them used to each other. This week we decided to let them mingle a little and what we have found is that Saber is EXTREMELY protective of the chis. If Gotti comes near them Saber runs over, growls and gets right in his face. He's already corrected Gotti once by nipping his cheek. How do we get him to not be protective and know that Gotti doesn't want to hurt them, All Gotti wants to do is play

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
