Aggressive Shih Tzu

by Connie
(Georgia)

We have an almost 2 year old Shih Tzu female and she has started sleeping in the bed with us. I go to bed before my husband, so she goes to bed with me. When my husband comes to bed, she snaps and growls at him as soon as he comes toward the bed. I get up at 4:30 each morning and normally take the dog off the bed and put her in her crate until I have had my shower etc. Today when I opened the crate she did not come out and when she did, I started to say "let's go outside" and she showed her teeth and growled and snapped at me. If my hand had been close to her, she would have bit me. This is the first time she has done this. My response to her was one of disbelief - I am sure I should have had a different response, but I am not sure what to do now.

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
