Aggressive Shibas in Taipei

I have 3 Shiba Inus, all rescues. 1) 5 yrs, Shiro; 2) 8yrs. Kuro, and newest member 3) 1 1/2yrs. Joey. Kuro was only one found in streets. He's the alpha, and the aggressive one. Shiro quickly cowered to his authority and only fought a couple times.

Since we got Joey, Kuro is trying to prove himself. He snaps at Joey, bites him when he runs and plays, guards us at the dinner table when we're eating to prevent Joey from getting close, and is more attached to me and doesn't let me move him when he is on the bed or couch without growling or becoming more aggressive.

Kuro and Joey fight at least once a week, just from Kuro snapping at him and Joey now protects himself.

They are all boys but none have been neutered.

I'm considering neutering Kuro now, but I wonder if I should train him first and handle the aggressiveness before putting him under the knife.

I really appreciate your time and help.

Dog Training Is A Way Of LIfe and How You...
by: Adam G. Katz

Hi, Meilee:

Dog training is a way of life. It's not only during a training session, but it's how you communicate with your dog.

Whether you neuter him before or after you start training is largely irrelevant.

What concerns me is when you say, "and doesn't let me move him when he is on the bed or couch..." -- as this tells me that YOU are not the alpha dog, but rather he is.

Once you straighten that out, your problems will disappear. My book goes into extensive detail, on how to do that. A good start though is by taking a "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach.

In the meantime-- getting your dogs neutered is a good idea, regardless. It will diminish the dominance issues and will eliminate the future possibility of testicular cancer and other diseases.

I don't think you are doing yourself any favors by not having them neutered.
