Aggressive Rat Terrier

Two weeks ago tomorrow we rescued an approx. 2 year old rat terrier mix. We were very clear with the shelter owner that we needed a dog that was good with kids and other dogs, as we have two boys, ages 7 & 9. The dog bonded very quickly and strongly to me.

He is now o.k. with my boys and husband, although yesterday he growled at my husband for the first time without provocation.

He is now growling at people that come to our home and sometimes at dogs we pass as we walk. We have been very careful to keep him on a leash when others are at our home, but the reality is that many kids are around and will continue to be.

Is there hope that he will settle down and become the kid and dog friendly dog we dreamed of?

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
