Aggressive Mini Aussie

My 10 month old (not neutered)Mini Aussie has show a form of aggressive behavior since he was a few months old. He would bite at kids and sneak up behind some of my husbands guy friends and bite at them or lunge at them. We also have a 6 year old Toy Rat Terrier(we've had him since he was a puppy) that he lunges at and bites now. When my daughter tries to take our Rat Terrier to bed at night my Aussie lunges and bites at her and when I've tried to stop him he has bit me as well. I recently started allowing him to stay out of his crate with our Rat Terrier during the day while I'm at work, we never crate trained our other dog...we always planned to do away with crate when we felt we could trust him to not chew things up. He's done really well being left out in the house but I wonder if that may have something to do with him getting more aggressive. Is there anything that I can do to stop this behavior before he really hurts someone? I love my Gus (Aussie) but I can no longer allow this behavior

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

Dog Aggression

Yes-- you can fix this. It's what we call "dog aggression" (in contrast to handler aggression).
You need to focus on two things:

1. Teach your dog to walk on a loose leash around all distractions. If she's on a loose leash, she cannot be paying attention to you and the other dog at the same time. It's either one or another, and if the leash is loose, then she has to watch you because she cannot FEEL from the tension in the leash, where you are.

2. You'll need to learn how to give a motivational correction, so that she clearly understands that this behavior is unacceptable. If she already knows that it's unacceptable, then the issue is that your correction is not firm enough, or you're not using the proper training collar (or it isn't fitted correctly!)
