Aggressive Mastiff

Let me first say how much I love my big guy. He is super well behaved around family and in my home. He knows commands, he sits, he is sweet with family, he is everything I could ever want in a family dog....except he is aggressive with strangers. We hired a trainer to come out and work with him and her final suggestion was that maybe there is no hope. I wholeheartedly want to believe she is wrong but we are moving into a small neighborhood with children and close houses. I love my dog but I can't take a chance that he will hurt someone.

When he is approached by a stranger or when he realizes he is too close to a stranger he will be very rude, butting with his nose, snarling, growling and jumping. He has not bitten anyone...yet. And we have a houseful of children so to say keep people away from him probably won't work well because you can only do so much. Is there anyone out there that has been through something like this or anyone who has advice.

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
