Aggressive Labrador

I recently rescued a black lab puppy who didn't live the beginning of his life in the best of conditions.

He is currently 7 months old but was born into a dog hoarder's trailer with tons of other dogs and didn't see the light of day for a while.

At his foster home he was around 15 or so other dogs for a while before he came to me. Now, he lives with another lab, 8 months, and 3 miniature dachshunds.

He is never aggressive towards the humans at all, not even when I touch his food or toys or bones, but if another dog, especially the little ones come near his food or toys, he goes after them and bites them even until we break up the fight. He has made them bleed a few times now and I don't know what to do about it.

This is obviously unacceptable behavior and needs to stop. Any advice on how to discipline him regarding food/toy aggression will be appreciated.

First advise would be, feed the dogs at different times. Feed the little doggies first and after a while your newly rescued puppy.

Keep the little dogs apart from the Lab and let him eat in piece, as you wrote he has been through a lot, so just imagine what is going through his head.

He is afraid and disturbed. So let him eat in piece and you also need to teach the little ones not to go to poke another dogs food.

Depends how long you have this new puppy, but changing the behaviour starts slowly-slowly and bit by bit.

After you re-assure him that he can enjoy his food alone and don't have to guard it anymore so passionately, while playing, give the treats to all of your dogs, so nobody feels left out, not the little ones or the Lab,learn to share.

Later when they are sharing treats good by them selves, you can start with a little amount of food for everybody!

Even for trained fully grown-up dog it is stressful while eating and another dog lurking around him, so for a puppy who is coming with a stressful background and hasn't been trained, you really can not expect him to sit tight :) It is good though, that he is willing to share his food with you and does not feel the urge to protect it from humans.

Try to solve the problem by yourself, if it seems like the situation in not going to change, it's probably a good idea to turn to a professional.

Finally they will get along :)
