Aggressive 4-1/2 month Great Dane

Our 4-1/2 month old Great Dane has been learning commands (sit, down stay, bed) very well. He will even stay on his bed and stay until given the OK command to eat his food. We have him wait before going outside or through any doorway. The problem is that he gets very wound up when he is on his leash outside, jumping, growling and biting whoever is within range. He also can be sitting or laying down on his leash and when someone walks by he will jump up and lunge at them. Yesterday he lunged and bit my 13 year old daughter when she walked by to give her grandmother a hug goodbye. We are really worried that this behavior will only get worse and we want to understand if this is who he is or if trading can help. We feel we will always be waiting for the next time he is going to lunge (and worse, bite). We have a trainer and we are going to work on walking with a prong collar and learn how to use an electric collar. Our fear is that this might not help and we will have to give him back to the breeder. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing In Life Is Free

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.

Dog Aggression

Yes-- you can fix this. It's what we call "dog aggression" (in contrast to handler aggression).
You need to focus on two things:

1. Teach your dog to walk on a loose leash around all distractions. If she's on a loose leash, she cannot be paying attention to you and the other dog at the same time. It's either one or another, and if the leash is loose, then she has to watch you because she cannot FEEL from the tension in the leash, where you are.

2. You'll need to learn how to give a motivational correction, so that she clearly understands that this behavior is unacceptable. If she already knows that it's unacceptable, then the issue is that your correction is not firm enough, or you're not using the proper training collar (or it isn't fitted correctly!)
