Bonding
by: Anonymous

How do you expect a 4 month old puppy to be fine 7 and a half hours a day alone. They need social bonding. Even worse if you throw it into the crate that long. A 4 month puppy can barely hold its bladder for up to 4 hours.

Help
by: Frustrated

I have a four month old male german shepherd. He only listens to my sons and husband. They say Im not being firm enough. I do not know what else to do. When Im sitting on couch, he comes up jumps on me and starts to bite. I replace my hand with a toy and he doesnt want it. I grab his collar gently and tell him no bite and look in his eyes. He just continues trying to bite me. I have turned my back on him, and I have gotten up and walked away. Nothing works. When I call him in from backyard, he wont come. I have to bribe him with something or go out to yard to get him, then he runs around yard, and the game is on. How do I stop this and let him know this is not playtime? When I walk him, he has started to grab leash in his mouth, then looks at me and tries to jump up on me. If i tell him to sit and give a small tug on leash, he sometimes sits and will wait for his treat. I only reward him if he does what he is supposed to. I cannot afford training, I am willing to put in the time, but dont know where to start.

Discipline and reward
by: Michigan Mom

I have one too!All that barking, jumping, and biting is attention related. They like lots of attention. If I don't want to be bothered with her I firmly tell her "no! go lay down some place!"If she doesn't I put her outside.Fortunately I have a fenced in yard.Having chew toys in the house is helpful. She likes tug of war or fetch.Have something handy to let her know you're done playing.I use the handle end of a fly swatter.Rewards is play time and table scraps no bones mixed with her food.Hope this is helpful.

So far so good
by: Carole

Although my dog still keeps us very busy I am happy to say that I think that I'm on the right track. He is also in his crate for 7.5 hours but he comes out happy and excited to do some eating and walking and see some of his toys that weren't with him all day. We will play some fetch with lots of treats for rewards. He has to work for everything even his dinner and breakfast.

Wish me luck

Obedience and a Training Collar
by: Adam G. Katz

Hi, Kathy:

You're going to want to teach your dog obedience exercises, and also put the training collar and tab on her-- as soon as you get home. Learning how to administer a motivational correction will teach your dog to immediately stop the rambunctious behavior you've described.
