18month old Pit mix Showing Signs of Dominance With Dog Friend

by Jude
(Grass Valley, Ca )

Our dog (Dasher) grew up with a 120 lb. English Lab (Smokey) both males. They have always enjoyed playing with each other and Smokey has been super tolerant and gentle with Dasher. We moved last year and so Smokey and Dasher see each other about every 3 months.

Smokey came to visit yesterday and I've noticed Dasher is being a little aggressive when playing. He doesn't want to share any of his toys and even blocks Smokey from getting in the pool. Then he growled and showed his teeth at Smokey when they were playing on the deck today.

I do not want this behavior to escalate. What type of correction should I be giving Dasher other than telling him "no" and to "be gentle"? Should I immediately remove him when he acts this way, like a "time out"? I have never seen this behavior with any other dog at dog park or elsewhere. Any suggestions for us?

Thank you!

Jude

Nothing In Life Is Free

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
